Historically, this was a huge church, built over a period of about a hundred years in the 11th Century. Much of the centre of the town was taken up by the enormous structure. However, the building is a great deal smaller than it used to be, having been reduced in size on several occasions. The area is now popular for both visitors and locals to gather and relax in the heart of the town.
