Avignon is one of the most important cities as far as the history of the Roman Catholic Church is concerned, so it may come as a surprise to some that the city has always had a rich and eclectic religious background. For many hundreds of years there has been a large Jewish community living in the city. The current synagogue was constructed in the 19th Century, replacing the more ancient building that was destroyed by fire.
