There has always been a grand tradition of charitable activity in this town, those with money recognising the need to help the poor and the needy find their way and survive in the community. This institution was set up in the 18th Century and successfully after that time brought a great deal of the wealthy on board to help promote the good cause. The wonderful building is now part of the historic monuments of Béthune.
