The Citadel overlooks the old town area from the corner of the peninsular. It isn’t necessarily what you would call a beautiful piece of architecture, but that said it has always played an important roll in the defence of the major port of Ajaccio in Corsica. The citadel is not usually open to the public as it is still used for some naval purposes; however it has a long and rich story that is worth hearing. Some free guides are available from the local tourism office.
