Based on the plans built up by the well known military designer Vauban, this Citadel was mainly constructed in the 16th Century and makes for an impressive centrepiece to the town. Sitting above the community the graceful stonework and imposing walls cast a shadow on the historic residential buildings that lie below. During the 1870 to 1871 conflict in France, the citadel was home to a large pocket of the resistance movement.
