On the 6th June 1944, the beach which was codenamed Omaha, close to Coleville and Vierville became one of the bloodiest battlefields in the Second World War. The Allied troops arrived in their thousands to liberate mainland Europe. The German army used the high cliffs as a defence point and caused massive casualties on the Allies, who refusing to surrender, battled on to finally regain control of the area. This is one of the most visited war sites in Europe.
