D Day Beaches - Gold, Juno & Sword
Route d’Arromanches, near Bayeux 14400 - France
When the time came for the Allied forces to try and recapture mainland Europe across the sea, it was a bloody event, many thousands of men losing their lives in just hours as they waded through the sea to attack the German occupying army. These three beaches which stretch for about thirty five kilometres along the coast north-west of Bayeux were some of the most bloody. British, Canadian, Commonwealth, Free French and Polish forces all arrived at once and gave valiant battle to regain control of the French coast as the Germans were forced to retreat.
