Fort St. Georges is the oldest part of the magnificent ruined fortress that stands on a hill overlooking the town of Chinon. The beautiful old building is one of three major parts of the chateau. It was constructed in the 13th Century in order to guard the extremely vulnerable eastern flank of the fortified area, and ha remained ever since. Today, much of the fortress has crumbled away, but still this is a fascinating structure that attracts a good deal of visitors.
