Every self respecting chateau of the 16th and 17th Century had its own ‘hameau’ or ‘hamlet’ in which a small group of servants lived and looked after the castle and the people within. This tiny village is of more importance than most because in the dairy in the centre of the hamlet, ‘Crème Chantilly’ was born, one of the most famous toppings for desserts in the country. It is crème beaten with icing and vanilla sugars, a sweet treat you can sample in the creamery.
