This cathedral, looming large in the heart of Chartres with an enigmatic majesty, is one of the greatest ecclesiastical and architectural achievements in he western world. Although not located in the centre of Paris, it certainly would not look out of place there. Built in the 13th Century, the Gothic style church was the second such building on the site, replacing the Romanesque church that preceded it. There are so many parts to the cathedral worth exploring, it is essential to get a guide book or leaflet before beginning.
