Although to many, Boulogne is considered to be little more than a ferry port, there is an exciting old town area that is seldom explored by visitors to the area. The ramparts are still complete and surround the old part of the town, offering one of the more delightful views of the community and the sea. The walls were built to defend the town when it was under English control, and subsequently kept to defend the town in the future when the English left.
