The ramparts of the chateau, just like in many ancient French towns and cities, were designed to protect the counts and countesses from attack when an army engaged in battle in and around the settlement. These impressive walls have been raised on several occasions in the last five hundred years, making for an imposing structure on the hill. Visitors love to walk around sections of the ramparts, affording them fantastic views of the castles and the town below.
