The old town of Concarneau stands on a small island in the port area of the town. It was walled for protection, and originally would have only been accessible by boat, making it almost impenetrable by attacking armies. This was made even harder by the high sturdy walls that surround the island. Today, the ramparts are one of the most popular visitor attractions in the area, allowing a great walk and a series of breathtaking views of the town and the seascape beyond.
