The city walls were built in medieval times in order to defend the town against attack from aggressive armies. Throughout the years the ramparts have been developed and added to. There are a series of fine towers along the walls, which would have originally served as lookout points. From the walls, visitors can see for many miles, over the old city and out into the countryside. It is a beautiful way to get your bearings in the area.
