Because this church was situated outside the old medieval walls of the city, it was always going to be vulnerable to attack from aggressive armies; therefore it had to be constructed like a fortress. The Romanesque bell tower is a fine example of this interesting mixture of ecclesiastical splendour and practical protection. The church was one part of a Benedictine monastery, but now stands alone as a place of worship of some note in the city.
