The city cathedral has stood in the old town since the beginning of the 12th Century and is one of the more imposing pieces of architecture in the city. The large eighteen metre wide cupolas that stand at the entrance are the largest in France. Much of the design of the cathedral was inspired by the Near East, although essentially it is built around a Romanesque framework. The 19th Century chapels on one side of the building are far more in keeping with the Gothic tradition.
