Building work was started on this small church in the 12th Century. Originally designed as a modest place of worship, the church became famous after it was found that it contained a piece of the skull of St. Lazarus. It was believed that this relic could cure leprosy and therefore visitors flocked from far and wide to visit the church. In order to deal with the vast numbers of people, the church had to be enlarged in the 13th Century.
