One of the main courtyards attached to the chateau, this building is one of the most famous in Fountainbleau. Often known as the ‘farewell courtyard’ as well as by the official title, this building is so famous because it was once the residence of Napoleon. In 1814, before he was about to be exiled to Elba, it was on the same magnificent staircase that still stands at the heart of the courtyard that he stood and said goodbye to his soldiers and officers.
