The citadel is one of the oldest parts of the town, and a fascinating place to visit because it is so steeped in intrigue and historical stories. The oldest part of the citadel is thought to date back to about the year 1000. Within the building are several areas of interest including the Round Tower and the Martlet which were both used as quite grim medieval prisons at one stage. The other end of the citadel is home to the royal residences where the monarchs would stay on short visits to the area.
