When the building of this mosque began in 1992, it was surrounded by controversy. Many local people were afraid that the minaret may detract from the grand basilica that had for many centuries formed the skyline of the city. That said, the building was completed in such a fashion that almost everyone was pleased. It is one of the central places of Muslim worship in Lyon and the surrounding areas and is a spectacular piece of modern architecture.
