Hans Kleberger is known by most of the citizens of Lyon simply as ‘The Good German’ and by some as the ‘Stone Man’. The latter is certainly no reference to the character of Kleberger, as he was one of the greatest philanthropists ever to have lived in the city. A wealthy German banker he set up a charity hospital and a series of other charities to help the poor and needy of the city. Today he is immortalised by this stone statue which looks beautiful as it is lit up at night by the river.
