Lyon became one of the most important cities in France in the Middle Ages when it carved out a niche in being the central trading point between Flanders and Italy, specialising in the trading of cloth from both sides. The result was a massive influx of wealth and merchants from around Europe, many of whom built beautiful homes at the heart of the old city.
