The name of this square relates to the many muddy moats that once flowed through the centre of Lyon. In the 16th Century these were covered over to make an impressive square, one of the centrepieces of the city. It was here during the French Revolution that the guillotine stood and many of the royals and their supporters met a bloody end. Today, the square is a place of peace and tranquillity that attracts locals and tourists alike to admire the architecture and fine facilities.
