Although there was an ancient 11th Century church in this street with the same name, it wasn’t actually situated on the same site. Like so many of the great historic monuments of the area it was destroyed by warring in the Middle Ages. The current church is still a fine construction and attracts visitors from across the area to marvel at the gilded interior and great exterior stonework. It is thought that this was one of the first fortified churches to be built within the city walls.
