The original church on this site is thought to have been built in about 1750, although virtually no trace of that building still remains. There is seemingly no explanation s to what happened, but the original church was destroyed shortly afterwards and another church was built around the relics. What we see today, the marvellous piece of late 18th Century ecclesiastical architecture, is the result of what happened at that time.
