This historic synagogue was completed in 1786 and made even larger in 1860. It was the first building of its type in France to be authorised by the king and therefore is an important historical milestone in the plight of the Jewish people in France. During the Second World War the synagogue narrowly avoided being destroyed by the Nazi army as the allied troops arrived in time to save it.
