The oldest part of La Rochelle is situated around the Vieux Port. This area still has a great deal of the original fortifications in place from when the town was under attack on a frequent basis from the sea. One of the best activities to get to know the town is to take a walk around the ramparts of the old town walls. This not only offers fascinating views of both the town and the seascape, but also helps you get a feel for the long history of the area.
