The Tour de la Lanterne is also known as Tour des Quatre Sergents. It is named in memory of four local sergeants from the La Rochelle garrison who plotted to overthrow the newly reinstated monarchy in France in 1822. This magnificent tower is one of the most interesting of those in La Rochelle, offering fine views across the town, and having graffiti all over it in English, from when English privateers were held in the tower during the 18th Century. It is one of the jewels in the crown of the town.
