There has been a place of worship on the site of the cathedral for well over a thousand years, but of course due to war and lack of upkeep, none of the original structure really exists anymore. The majority of what one can see today is the impressive building that was put together in the 16th Century. Many of the features that are obvious from the outside were added in the following centuries, but essentially what you see is a n ancient cathedral, the heart of the city.
