The original Franciscan Convent was built in the city in 1248, and was a magnificent piece of architecture, dedicated to the work and the people of God. This however was destroyed, along with a lot of the city during a series of raids and sackings in the 15th Century. In the late 1400s it was decided that the convent would be rebuilt, and the majority of the beautiful structure that one sees today is the result of this building programme.
