Alphonse de Lamartine is by far and away the most famous son of the town of Macon. One of the great romantic poets of the 19th Century, Lamartine showcased his works all over France and Europe and remains one of the best read writers of that era. He was also known for having very strong left leaning political views, which kept him at odds with many establishment figures throughout his lifetime. The museum is dedicated to his life and works, containing a wide range of his poems and writings.
