This interesting exhibition space was quite ahead of its time when it was opened in the late 19th Century. Using the old orangery of the palace as a venue, the idea of the museum was to be a place where local and visiting artists could have exhibitions of their work in a beautiful location at the heart of the city. This was quite unusual at the time, but the principle has been followed by many galleries around the capital now. Today, the gallery still operates with some of the finest work out of Paris on display.
