It was Jacques d’Aragon that decided the city of Montpellier would become fortified in 1204. At that time the city centre was sealed off from the surrounding districts and the countryside that was home to aggressive armies. This grand palace was built as a home to the ruling families of the city. It has been destroyed and renovated on several occasions in the past few centuries, but still boasts an impressive 17th Century spiral staircase and gothic doorway. Visitors are welcome to walk around the site.
