The old city was protected by very high stone walls that were built in the middle ages, and made sure that attacking armies were not able to access the important areas of the city or get to the nobility who would be locked away at the heart of the community. These ramparts still remain in part and this section of them is a great place to walk along and attain fine views of the old city and the countryside that lies beyond it on the horizon.
