Unfortunately only a small amount of the Roman amphitheatre still remains, although those arches that are on show are some magnificent examples of Roman architecture from the 1st Century. Most of the amazing construction was taken to pieces in the 3rd Century to build the magnificent city walls that defended the city for many centuries. At its peak, the vast theatre would have held around 30,000 baying fans as they watched sporting events unfold.
