This was one of the first Gothic churches to be built in the southern regions of France and is certainly the first of its type in Narbonne. It was constructed on the tomb of the Archbishop of Narbonne, Saint Paul, after which it is named and the crypt has what is considered to be an early Christian graveyard within it.
