Saint John’s Gate is a designated historic monument, and would have been one of the main entrances to the city through the vast fortified walls at times of war from the 11th Century onwards. A masterpiece of military and local design, the gateway is a huge and imposing stone structure that is just as grand and exquisitely built as any of the rest of the ramparts. There are some delicate carvings in the gate that are being restored during the early part of the 21st Century.
