As you will see when you visit this town, the majority of the population were designed to live within the large fort area on top of the hill. The layout was designed by Vauban under the instructions of Louis XIV in the late 1690s. The idea of the town was simple, to create a fortress that those trying to cross the border from the German side were unable to pass. The result is this impressive and good looking military structure, a masterpiece of Vauban’s design.
