You are advised to take extreme caution when visiting this island, as the small causeway that allows access to the area from the old port is very quickly overcome by the tides and can stay covered for over six hours. However, weather permitting it is well worth the trek across to see the 18th Century fort where for some time the great author Chateaubriand lived and worked. The island offers a unique view of the old port city in all its glory.
