This area of northern France shares a good deal of similarities with the nearby neighbours of Germany, over which the area has been disputed with in the past. The one thing that they really have in common in this area is that they are both very keen on wine making. This isn’t something strange for the French you are saying, but in this region the mainly white wine that is produced is far more like German than French wine.
