This quite extraordinary public building was created in the 17th Century to house the rebellious Breton Parliament. They asserted autonomy, claiming an independent rule from the rest of France, recognising that the people of Brittany were significantly different to the rest of the French; they were closer to Celts than to Parisians. The parliament was ill fated, but the building remained and became the Palace of Justice for many years and remains one of the most visited buildings in the city.
