This community grew up around the Benedictine Abbey which was originally constructed in the 7th Century. Several major changes were made to the Abbey, most notably in the 12th and 19th Century. Still this magnificent structure remains and is one of the most recognisable architectural features of the town. It is well worth a close look at the outside and the inside of this building which holds a great deal of history.
