One of the great centrepieces of the gardens at the Palace of Versailles are the two canals that interlock with one another. One is known as the Grand Canal and the other the Petit Canal; they both offer a real sense of life and freshness to the gardens, especially on a hot summer’s day. The canals are positioned in order to reflect the setting sun. It was a popular place for Louis XIV to spend time, hosting boat parties on the canals.
