A walk around the Ramparts is one of the best ways to see the old town at its best, and also to get nice views of the river and the surrounding countryside. The walls were built as a defence for the community in the 13th and 14th Centuries and have stood ever since, today mainly as a landmark and monument to the past, no longer needed for their original purpose. A great deal of the original walls remain and are a popular tourist route.
