Henri Matisse moved to the town in 1943 and made his home in Vence for some time. He was persuaded by a local nurse to design a chapel building in the northern fringes of the town, and he duly did, creating this amazing masterpiece of modern architecture and art. Every single detail has been carefully designed and crafted to make it as exceptionally beautiful as any of the great Renaissance or Gothic churches.
