Legend has it that in 1538, Francis I, King of France cam e to the town in order to meet Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire and sign a treaty. There are many historical reasons why this may simply be legend and never have happened, but the locals are adamant that the Ash tree that stands outside the city walls was planted by the king as a sign of the pact. Whether true or not, the tree has been visited for many hundreds of years as a historical monument.
