The city archives are housed in an interesting building, close to the city centre. It is probably the best place to visit if you are interested in finding out more about the history of Marseille and the region that surrounds it. It has a massive archive of documents, maps, banknotes and decrees that bare some relation to the formation of the city. There is a large reading room which is open to the public throughout the week.
