At one stage there were eight huge towers that surrounded the city of Rouen, built in the 13th Century to fortify the great settlement. It was within this sole surviving tower that Joan of Arc was imprisoned before she was executed for heresy. Today visitors are invited to enter the tower and see the cramped conditions within which she lived. There are also two small exhibitions, dedicated to the life and times of the famous martyr.
