The majority of the modern port was destroyed during World War II, and it wasn’t until work started on reconstructing the area, that the discovery of the ancient port was made. This museum opened in 1961 and houses much of the well preserved Roman port that had been hidden from the world for almost two thousand years. There are a series of fascinating exhibitions and displays that contain many ancient artefacts found during the excavations.
